Open Educational Resource (OER) Pressbook Project

This document details the collaborative project to transcribe and modernize the Fourth Edition of “Malayalam: A University Course and Reference Grammar” by Rodney F. Moag for publication as an Open Educational Resource (OER) Pressbook.

1. Project Overview and Objectives

The primary objective of this project is to create a digital “clone” of the 4th Edition (originally published in 2002 and updated in 2018) to enable future improvements, expansions, and wider academic accessibility. While previous computer-based versions existed, they utilized non-standard fonts developed in the early 1990s. This project migrates the entire text into standard Unicode Malayalam, ensuring the content is fully searchable, accessible via screen readers, and compatible with modern web environments.

2. Scope of Transcription

The project encompasses the complete pedagogical and reference apparatus of the original textbook:

• Core Instructional Material: Full transcription of all 25 Lessons, including bilingual conversations (Malayalam and English), vocabulary lists, reading practices, and nearly 200 pages of detailed grammar notes.
• Reference Appendices: Integration of Appendices A through F, covering pronouns, verb paradigms, time expressions, postpositions, opposites, and the associative case.
• The “Minilesson” Series: Digitization of the seven transitional “Minilessons” (A–G) found between chapters, covering situational topics like Kerala foods and casual speech patterns.
• Searchable Back Matter: A comprehensive Malayalam-English Glossary sorted by English definition for student utility, and the replication of the textbook’s three distinct indices (English Meaning, Malayalam Word, and Grammatical Category).

3. Methodology and Technical Standards

To maintain the high linguistic standards of the original work while adapting it for a digital OER format, the following protocols were observed:

• Unicode Prioritization: In accordance with Kerala government script reforms, the “new” simplified script is used, though linguistic precision for chillus and consonant clusters (e.g., എെന്റ) is strictly maintained.
• Palatalization Markers: Verbs in the reference sections maintain Moag’s [y] notation to indicate the palatalization of stem-final consonants, preserving the book’s value as a reference grammar for linguists.
• Pressbook Compatibility: Content is formatted using Markdown table structures and H1/H2 header hierarchies to facilitate automatic Table of Contents generation and high-quality PDF/EPUB exports.
• AI-Assisted Curation: The transcription process utilized advanced AI tools to verify Unicode rendering and identify missing data or placeholders in early Pressbook drafts [Conversation History].

4. Acknowledgments and Institutional Support

This digital modernization builds upon a foundation supported by the U.S. Department of Education and the University of Texas at Austin South Asia Institute. It honors the work of Rodney F. Moag and his original contributors, including Thomas Joseph (Satish), Rema Nair, and Dr. A.P. Andrewskutty, whose efforts transitioned the text from hand-written Malayalam to the computer-generated era.

This digital edition serves as a bridge between the textbook’s historical legacy and the requirements of the modern international diaspora and research community.
