Exercise 1: Adjectival Phrases
Make the first noun in each pair into an adjective describing the second noun by using -aaya (ആയ) as shown in the Reading Practice.
- അംശം, അകലം (amsham, akalam) അംശമായ അകലം (A partial distance)

Exercise 2: Causative Verbs
Transform the following sentences into causatives. Where a new subject is required, it is provided in parentheses.
- ആ കുട്ടികൾ എല്ലാ ദിവസവും പത്രം വായിക്കുന്നു. (ആ കുട്ടികളെക്കൊണ്ട്…) (Those children read the newspaper every day.) ആ കുട്ടികളെക്കൊണ്ട് എല്ലാ ദിവസവും പത്രം വായിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. (Making those children read the newspaper every day.)
- ഇംഗ്ലീഷിലെ പ്രധാനമന്ത്രി ഈ ഓഫീസിൽ ഇരിക്കുന്നു. (ഞാൻ…) (The English Prime Minister sits in this office.) ഞാൻ ഇംഗ്ലീഷിലെ പ്രധാനമന്ത്രിയെ ഈ ഓഫീസിൽ ഇരുത്തുന്നു. (I make the English Prime Minister sit in this office.)
- ഒരാഴ്ചത്തെ വിശ്രമത്തിനു ശേഷം അവർ പട്ടണത്തിലേക്ക് പോകുന്നു. (ഞാൻ…) (After a week’s rest, they go to the city.) ഞാൻ ഒരാഴ്ചത്തെ വിശ്രമത്തിനു ശേഷം അവരെ പട്ടണത്തിലേക്ക് അയക്കുന്നു. (I send them to the city after a week’s rest.)
- പത്രത്തിലെ ആഫീസിൽ ഒരവധി ദിവസവും അവർ എട്ടു മണിക്ക് വരുന്നുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. (മാനേജർ അവരെക്കൊണ്ട്…) (They used to come to the newspaper office at 8 o’clock even on holidays.) മാനേജർ അവരെക്കൊണ്ട് അവധി ദിവസവും എട്ടു മണിക്ക് വരുത്തിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. (The manager used to make them come at 8 o’clock even on holidays.)
- അവർ സന്തോഷിച്ചു. (പണം…) (They were happy.) പണം അവരെ സന്തോഷിപ്പിച്ചു. (Money made them happy.)
- അവർക്ക് എനിക്ക് പണം തരാൻ കഴിഞ്ഞോ? (നിങ്ങൾ…) (Were they able to give me the money?) നിങ്ങൾ അവരെക്കൊണ്ട് എനിക്ക് പണം തരുവിച്ചോ? (Did you make them give me the money?)
- അവൻ പുസ്തകത്തിലെ എല്ലാ കാര്യങ്ങളും നന്നായി അറിഞ്ഞു. (അമ്മ…) (He learned everything in the book well.) അമ്മ അവനെ പുസ്തകത്തിലെ എല്ലാ കാര്യങ്ങളും നന്നായി അറിയിച്ചു. (Mother informed/taught him everything in the book well.)
- ആ കുട്ടികൾക്ക് പഠിക്കാൻ കഴിഞ്ഞില്ല. (ഞാൻ…) (Those children could not study.) ഞാൻ ആ കുട്ടികളെ പഠിപ്പിച്ചില്ല. (I did not teach those children.)
- വിധി വശാൽ നമുക്ക് ദുഃഖം സംഭവിക്കുന്നു. (ഇത്…) (By fate, sorrow happens to us.) ഇത് നമുക്ക് ദുഃഖം സംഭവിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. (This causes us sorrow.)
- അവർ അവനെ അവിടെ താമസിപ്പിച്ചു. (They made him stay there.) അവർ അവനെ അവിടെ താമസിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. (Present tense causative)

Exercise 3: Passive to Active
Convert the following passive constructions into active sentences.
- നിങ്ങളെ ആ വിവരം പണ്ടേ അറിയിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. (You were informed of that news long ago.) ആ വിവരം നിങ്ങളെ പണ്ടേ അറിയിച്ചു.
- ഓണം ഇങ്ങനെയൊക്കെ ആഘോഷിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. (കേരളീയർ) (Onam is celebrated in these ways.) കേരളീയർ ഓണം ഇങ്ങനെയൊക്കെ ആഘോഷിക്കുന്നു.
- ഈ ജോലി ഇങ്ങനെയൊക്കെയാണ് ചെയ്യപ്പെടുന്നത്. (This work is done in this manner.) ഈ ജോലി ഇങ്ങനെയൊക്കെയാണ് ചെയ്യുന്നത്.
- ആ കഥകൾ കേൾക്കപ്പെടാത്തതുകൊണ്ട് ആരും വന്നില്ല. (Because those stories were not heard, no one came.) ആ കഥകൾ കേൾക്കാത്തതുകൊണ്ട് ആരും വന്നില്ല.
- എങ്ങനെയോ അനുവാദം കിട്ടപ്പെട്ടതുകൊണ്ട് ഭാഗ്യം. (Luckily, permission was somehow obtained.) എങ്ങനെയോ അനുവാദം കിട്ടിയതുകൊണ്ട് ഭാഗ്യം.
- ഇവിടെയുള്ള കാര്യങ്ങളൊക്കെ ശരിക്കു കാണപ്പെടുന്നു. (Everything here is clearly seen.) ഇവിടെയുള്ള കാര്യങ്ങളൊക്കെ ശരിക്കു കാണുന്നു.
- അവർ എല്ലാവർക്കും നന്നായി അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. (എല്ലാവരും) (They are well known to everyone.) എല്ലാവരും അവരെ നന്നായി അറിയുന്നു.
- ഈ കത്തുകൾ ആ ഐതിഹ്യങ്ങളാൽ എഴുതപ്പെട്ടു. (These letters were written by those legends.) ആ ഐതിഹ്യങ്ങൾ ഈ കത്തുകൾ എഴുതി.
- അവർ അവിടെ വച്ച് സ്തുതിക്കപ്പെട്ടു. (They were praised there.) അവർ അവിടെ വച്ച് അവരെ സ്തുതിച്ചു.
- സന്തോഷപൂർവ്വം കേരളീയർ എല്ലാം ചെയ്യുന്നു. (ഭരണാധികാരി) (Keralites do everything happily.) ഭരണാധികാരി കേരളീയരെക്കൊണ്ട് എല്ലാം സന്തോഷപൂർവ്വം ചെയ്യിക്കുന്നു.

Translate the following English sentences into Malayalam.
- The Rocky Mountains are in the Western part of America. റോക്കി പർവ്വതങ്ങൾ അമേരിക്കയുടെ പടിഞ്ഞാറ് ഭാഗത്താണ്.
