Preface

This digital edition of A Catechism of Malayalam Grammar brings together the English and Malayalam question‑and‑answer tradition that shaped early grammatical instruction in Kerala. The original 1867 text by Hermann Gundert and L. Garthwaite was designed as a concise, structured introduction to Malayalam phonology, morphology, and syntax.

This edition preserves the pedagogical clarity of the catechism format while presenting the material in a modern, accessible layout suitable for digital reading, classroom use, and linguistic study. Malayalam content has been normalized where appropriate, OCR artefacts corrected, and the structure reorganized using Pressbooks’ semantic headings.

The goal of this edition is not only preservation but usability — enabling learners, teachers, and researchers to navigate the material with ease.
